Off to a New Destination

Well today has been a day of waiting mostly.  We had to wait most of the day to find out when Gary would be transferred to the Toronto General.  The doctors and nurses from the Juravinski fought hard to get him moved there as quick as possible.  I also would not give up and continued to ask and expect answers with times.  We were finally in luck when they told us around 3:00 that a bed will be available for Gary in the transplant step down unit.  He would be transported by orange ambulance to the Toronto around 6.  Well they didn't call me until 7:00 to tell me that he was being loaded up on the stretcher.  So Mom Drost and I quickly went on the Go Train to head to the hospital.

As for how Gary is doing health wise today, he remained stable for most of the day which was what was needed in order for Toronto to take him in.  His kidneys have been steadily declining since he was sedated on Monday and will most likely receive dialysis once in Toronto.  His oxygen levels were also slightly lower and he needed a bit of oxygen towards the end of the day.  His breathing is becoming laboured because of the swelling and fluid build up occurring again.  However because of his lower blood pressure, they do not want to drain the fluid again.  He was also very sleepy today.

But there were highlights to the day when Gary was awake and able to communicate with us.  He also was finally able to have a little more then water and ice chips and he really enjoyed his milk and jello again.  He still tried for a peppermint a couple of times but to no avail.  He also was able to banter with Chris which was nice to see.

As I sit here with Mom Drost waiting to see Gary at the General in Toronto, I already miss the familiar faces and places of Jurvinski hospital.  The nurses gave an exceptional level of care which we are very thankful for.

I am still humbled by the support that we both receive from everyone around us.  The texts with uplifting Bible passages and cards that are received give us the much needed encouragement right now.  Although Gary is not really aware of all that is happening I do read him the messages sent and who they are from and he expresses his thanks.
